The Samajwadi Party (SP) has slammed the decision of Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) to rename Lucknow's iconic Hazratganj Chauraha after former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Speaking to India Today, SP spokesperson Anurag Bhadauria said, "Instead of renaming Hazratganj Chauraha, it would have been better if the state government decides to build new hospitals, educational institutions and roads in memory of the former prime minister. The government is trying to change the history and culture of this city."

"The BJP carried out ashes immersion yatra just to gain political advantage from Vajpayee's death. This government has done no development and is now trying to divert the minds of the people by doing such things," added Bhadauria.

Hitting out at his statement , UP BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said, "Atal ji was respected by leaders from all political parties and he had a strong emotional connect. People who are raising questions over this move need to change their mindset."

The mayor of Lucknow Sanyukta Bhatia on Friday had said that people want to keep the memories of Vajpayee alive. Therefore, a decision has been taken in the executive council meeting of the LMC to rename the city's most famous chauraha after the former PM.

According to Bhatia, LMC will also be making a grand memorial to honour Vajpayee's contribution.

Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee served as Lok Sabha MP from Lucknow for five consecutive terms (1991-2009).
