A centenarian couple passed away in a span of thirty minutes within each other's demise on Monday night at a village in Alangudi Taluk, which falls under Pudokottai district of Tamil Nadu.

Vetrivel (104) and Pichayi (100) were married for 80 years and said to be in good health. The couple hailed from Kuppakudi village in Alangudi taluk.

On Monday night, Vetrivel was rushed to the hospital after he complained of chest pain. However, he was declared brought dead. When he was taken back home, Pichayi broke down on seeing her husband’s mortal remains.

As the relatives were making arrangements for Vetrivel’s funeral, Pichayi fainted next to her husband’s lifeless body. Efforts to revive her proved futile.

The family immediately called a doctor who then confirmed that Pichayi, too, had passed away.

Vetrivel, who was a farmer by profession, is survived by five sons and one daughter apart from 23 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

The couple lived as a joint family at their ancestral house in Kuppakudi.

Our grandfather and grandmother were an ideal couple. My grandmother was very upset when she saw grandfather’s body. Funeral for them took place on Tuesday. We are saddened that both of them left us on the same day, said L Kumaravel, one of the grandchildren.
