In its first public warning, the Public Works Department (PWD) cautioned people residing near Cauvery banks and low lying areas to move to safer places.

Due to incessant rains earlier in this week, landslips were reported in at least in 10 places in the Nilgiris district, particularly Coonoor, affecting movement of vehicles in the region.

All educational institutions schools and colleges across the Nilgiris were closed on Tuesday over predictions of heavy showers in the district.

Meanwhile, Chennai received its highest rainfall in 24-hours on October 19. The city received 101.6 mm of rainfall.
