The statue of Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar located in Pillayarpatti was vandalized on Monday.

Some miscreants desecrated the statue by smearing Thiruvalluvar's face with ink. The poet's statue also had cow dung smeared on it. The statue has now been cleaned.

Police are investigating the matter.

Condemning the vandalisation of the statue, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief MK Stalin tweeted, "Periyar statue was vandalised. Picture of Thiruvalluvar was saffronized. And now his statue has been vandalised in Thanjavur. People who fought for Tamil are being disrespected and it is becoming a regular affair. The AIADMK govt should hang its head in shame."

The incident happened after the Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tweeted a picture of Thiruvalluvar in saffron clothes, white ash and Rudraksh allegedly teasing DMK which consequently criticised the BJP. The opposition condemned the tweet accusing the BJP of "saffronising Thiruvalluvar".

The BJP's tweet targeted the DMK and the Communists, who it claimed was dependent on the DMK, for questioning the existence of god and berating those who believe in god. It quoted a couplet from Thirukkural and asked what use was of their education.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on a three-day tour to Thailand, released a book on 'Thirukkural' in Thai language in Bangkok on Friday.
