Uttarakhand finance minister Prakash Pant passed away in the US earlier on Tuesday.

Prakash Pant was undergoing a treatment for lung ailment in the US.

A three-day state mourning has been declared in Uttarakhand after the death of finance minister Prakash Pant.

One-day public holiday has also been declared for Thursday.

Uttarakhand finance minister Prakash Pant went abroad for the treatment in May's last week, according to a source close to Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat.

Prakash Pant was undergoing treatment at a hospital at Rohini in New Delhi for a long time and did not campaign for the party in the Lok Sabha elections.

In February this year, according to a report, Prakash Pant almost fainted twice while reading his budget speech in the state assembly.

During Prakash Pant's budget speech, he fell over the microphone but was helped by fellow members in the House.

Prakash Pant resumed reading the speech after regaining consciousness but again began feeling uncomfortable.

Prakash Pant was extended medical assistance and offered a glass of water.

Prakash Pant was said to be one of the front runners in the race to be the chief minister of the state in 2017.
