Vadodara rains updates: Gujarat city flooded, trains cancelled, airport shut down

Heavy rain lashed Vadodara, Gujarat on Wednesday.

The downpour in Vadodra caused waterlogging on roads which called for trouble for commuters taking the clogged roads.

Rainfall in Vadodara brought much needed respite from the summer heat on Wednesday. The heavy rainfall may have brought down the temperatures in Vadodara but also caused waterlogging at many places.

A Twitter user shared a video of a waterlogged road after rain hit Vadodara.

After the heavy rainfall hit Vadodara, it took only a couple of hours for commuters to find themselves stuck in traffic jams.

VADODARA RAINS UPDATES:

  • Heavy rainfall caused waterlogging in the city on Wednesday.
  • District collector of Vadodara declared holiday in all government, private and Vadodara Municipal Corporation-run schools on Thursday.
  • As many as 13 trains have been cancelled due to waterlogging in BRC area (Vadodara Junction).
  • Due to heavy rain and waterlogging, principal district judge ordered all courts functioning at headquarters of Vadodara District, including taluka courts, to remain closed on Thursday.
  • Between 8 am and 8 pm, Vadodara received 442 mm of rainfall, the highest in Gujarat on Wednesday.
  • The state government asked the local administration to shift people from low-lying areas in Vadodara if needed as water entered into houses in several localities.
  • The Vadodara airport on the outskirts of the city was temporarily shut down and two domestic flights were cancelled, airport authorities said.
  • Chief Minister Vijay Rupani called a meeting in the evening to review the situation in Vadodara, and asked IAS officers Vinod Rao and Lochan Sehra to rush to the city to provide guidance to the local administration in tackling the situation.
  • Gujarat Chief Minister Vadodara visited State Control Office in Gandhinagar to take stock of the situation in Vadodara.
  • A 24-hour available emergency control room -- with numbers 18002330265, 0265 2423101 and 0265 2426101 -- has been set up by authorities for the assistance of people in Vadodara.

On July 30, parts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra received heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted "widespread" rainfall across the state till Saturday.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were put on stand-by in various rainfall districts in north and south Gujarat and Saurashtra region to tackle any eventuality.

The India Meteorological Department forecasts widespread rainfall across Gujarat till Saturday, with "heavy to very heavy rainfall" in south and north Gujarat regions, especially in Valsad, Bharuch, Navsari, Tapi, Banaskantha and Patan districts.
