The poignant story of a young woman in Mumbai inspired the internet as she garnered a whole lot of love and encouragement from netizens. Her story has been shared in a post made available online by Humans Of Bombay.

To begin with, she endured the wrath of a disturbed childhood after her birth in a chawl in Mumbai. Her parents fought constantly so much so that her father refused to share the financial burden at home after a point of time. Once, as per her narration in the post, her father also physically abused her mother.

"Once when my mother got really tired of everything, she took me to the beach, to drown both me and herself. But in that moment, she realised that quitting wasn't an option, she needed to take a stand for herself," she said, as per the post.

Life didn't change as such for her after this. In fact, it got worse. She met somebody in college and fell "madly in love" with him. "He was 5 years older than me, he became my anchor, and I got attached to him very quickly. But once, he suddenly told me he didn't want to be with me anymore," she said.

She was devastated and had an emotional breakdown after she had a "big fight" with her father on the same day as her break-up. "I was so exhausted of all the emotional trauma, that I decided to end my life. I went to a nearby street, stood there and drank a whole bottle of phenyl. The next thing I remember is waking up in a hospital bed," she added.

Although she lost her friends after the failed suicide attempt, it gave her a "new lease on life". She went for counselling. Got better with medication. And moved out with her mother from her house. "I pursued a masters in Journalism and then got a job with All India Radio. It's been a few years now & I'm in a much better place in life," she said, adding that she also established her own organisation.

*TRIGGER WARNING* I grew up in a chawl & always saw my parents fighting with each other. My dad’s alleged partnership’ with a lady, deeply disturbed my mom. He stopped contributing at home & once even beat my mom hard with a belt. When my mom couldn’t take it anymore, she took me to a beach, to drown both of us. But in that moment, she realised she couldn’t quit & had to take a stand. Soon after, when there was another fight, she filed a police complaint against my dad. But after some questioning, they sent him back. We spent a few years like that, with my dad tormenting us & mom threatening to file a complaint. Soon I joined college & that’s when I met someone who I fell in love with. He was 5 years older than me, he became my anchor & I was very attached to him. But once, he suddenly broke up with me. I was heartbroken. On the same day, my dad & I too had a big fight. I was so exhausted, that I decided to end my life. I went to a nearby street, stood there & drank a bottle of phenyl. The next thing I remember is waking up in a hospital bed. I’d been in the ICU for 4 days. My dad visited me & told me if I really wanted to die, I should’ve researched better’. I got out in a week & I’d lost all of my friends, because they didn’t want to be near someone like me’. Everyone saw me as a lost cause. But that failed suicide attempt, gave me a new lease on life. I was asked to go for counselling & was even given medication to get better. That changed my perspective on how I saw my life. Soon, my mom & I moved out, I embraced my past & realised that I had nothing to be ashamed of. I pursued a masters in Journalism & then got a job with All India Radio. It’s been a few years now & I’m in a much better place in life. I’ve even opened my own organisation where on different occasions, me & a few other people go out & serve tea to the police officers on duty. Of course, the scars of my past are still fresh & still bother me. So, what I’m really saying is before judging someone the next time, or stereotyping them in a certain way remember that everyone everywhere is going through something & a bit of kindness from you, could be the difference between life & death."
