It's not a craft beer hotel, but BrewDog is opening a bar in Indianapolis thanks to fans

The Scotland-based brewery that brought the world its first craft beer hotel and embraced the concept of "paw-ternity" is opening a bar in Indianapolis — and it was made possible by local craft beer fans supporting the company's crowdfunding campaign.

What does BrewDog have planned for Indianapolis?

BrewDog, whose first U.S. brewery is in Columbus, Ohio, confirmed in an email to IndyStar that it is planning a 4,000 square-foot taproom with in Fountain Square's Forte Building at 1140 Shelby St.

It will have 24 beers on tap, an outdoor patio, and a "craft-beer-infused menu of upscale bar food."

The Indianapolis bar will be the brewery's first U.S. bar outside of Ohio.

It is slated to open in September.

How did Indianapolis land a BrewDog brewpub?

Indianapolis became a contender for a U.S. brewpub when more than 500 Indianapolis beer fans invested in the company's massive crowdfunding campaign called Equity for Punks

“BrewDog beer has been available in Indianapolis since January 2018, but thanks to the overwhelming support from Indy craft brew fans, it’s time to offer a bigger BrewDog experience," BrewDog USA's CEO Tanisha Robinson said in an email response to IndyStar.

Cofounders James Watt and Martin Dickie launched the crowdfunding initiative in 2010. BrewDog USA has garnered more than 12,600 investors who have invested more than $8.5 million, according to its website.

BrewDog investors receive access to benefits, including discounts at BrewDog bars and the online shop; free brewery tours; and a free beer on their birthday.

What else should I know about BrewDog?

Established in 2007, BrewDog has more than 50 bars across the world.

BrewDog has made headlines for its over-the-top — let's call them amazing — ideas. The hotel the brewery built in Ohio, which is called the Doghouse, has a beer fridge in the shower and window views of beer-making. And "paw-ternity?" The company gives new dog owners a week of paid leave.

It also announced an endeavor called BrewDog Airlines in October. It's exactly what you'd think: a craft beer-focused flight.

Oh, and they also make beer. Their flagship beer is called Punk IPA. They also boast an "Amplified" collection of beers that the website says offers an "intense flavor profile that is off the scale."
