Doughnut ice cream sandwiches! Here are Indy's newest doughnut shops

Everyone loves Long’s Donuts, but these sweet spots take doughnuts to delicious extremes

Places like Long's Bakery and Boyden's Southside Bakery are glazed doughnut institutions in Indianapolis, but sometimes you want a doughnut that's a screaming puff of sugar, candy, chocolate, everything madness.

These doughnut shops haven't been around for as many years as Long's or Boyden's, but they've already made lasting impressions with doughnut ice cream sandwiches, doughnut cups filled with espresso and build-your-own doughnuts. Try them all to get as crazy as you want on National Doughnut Day or any day.

If doughnut ice cream sandwiches are your thing, hit this north-side shop for glazed doughnuts stuffed with two scoops of ice cream and one topping of your choice. The shop boasts 16 rotating ice cream flavors, which lately have included peach, honey lavender, pineapple Dreamsicle, caramel mocha brownie and raspberry sorbet. Frosted animal crackers, Lucky Charms cereal and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Churros are among toppings.

TeeJay's Sweet Tooth on Indianapolis' north side boasts 16 rotating ice cream flavors that may be stuffed inside glazed doughnuts and hit with various toppings including breakfast cereal.

The Doughnut Experiment

6159 N. Keystone Ave., 317-981-5980, thedonutexperiment.com

Order whatever is on special at this shop where you get to watch bakers fry doughnuts. The s’mores chocolate-frosted doughnut covered in graham cracker pieces and marshmallow drizzle is on special until June 10. You may also build your own doughnut. Ask for a scoop of ice cream on top.

Rebellion Doughnuts

17677 Cumberland Road, Noblesville, and 222 E. Market St., downtown Indianapolis, 317-219-6504, rebelliondoughnuts.com

The Noblesville shop landed with the Espresso Nutella Doughnut Shot heard across the metro area. People lined up for the doughnut at pop-ups months before Rebellion opened. The hollowed-out, raised sugar doughnut is coated in Nutella and then filled with a shot of espresso. Down the coffee and then savor the coffee-soaked doughnut at the Noblesville store or the newest Rebellion at Indy City Market.

The Donut Refinery

Special flavors at this build-your-own-doughnut shop are always fun, for instance watermelon margarita for National Doughnut Day 2019 on June 7. Cronuts are a big deal here when they show up on the specials board. The doughnut croissant hybrid might be simply glazed,  coated in cinnamon sugar or blueberry-filled.

360 Bakery

2222 W. Southport Road, 317-851-8478

Cookies and cream doughnuts here mean vanilla-frosted, cream-filled, chocolate longboards coated in crumbled Oreos. For WIBC’s Donut Day Indy competition, bakers were testing a spiral doughnut resembling a cinnamon roll but with French toast and maple syrup flavors. The doughnut may be for sale at the bakery the weekend of June 6. Keep in mind that this shop is open Wednesday-Sunday only.

Eat Pop’s Donuts

329 Indianapolis Road, Mooresville, EatPopsDonuts@gmail.com, eatpopsdonuts.com
