Indianapolis weather: A sunny Thanksgiving and a wet Black Friday night

Pedestrians look out at falling snow and stay warm inside a pedestrian walkway on IUPUI's campus in Indianapolis, Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018. An overnight wintry mix left Indianapolis covered in freezing rain and snow Thursday morning and afternoon.

Whether you're participating in a game of touch football with family before Thanksgiving dinner or standing in line at a department store in search of deep holiday discounts, you should have some pretty decent weather.

According to the National Weather Service, the ice and snow that defined last week will be replaced with sunny skies and mild conditions heading toward Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

The daytime high temperatures for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are 41 degrees, 38 degrees and 45 degrees respectively, according to the forecast. Each night, temperatures are expected to dip into the low 30s.

Thanksgiving Day is expected to be sunny with a daytime high temperature of 45 degrees. Thursday night will remain clear with a low around 33 degrees.

Black Friday is on pace to be one of the warmest days of the week with a daytime high of 50 degrees, but it is likely rain returns to Central Indiana heading into the weekend.

Friday night brings an 80 percent chance of precipitation and a low of around 41 degrees.

The dry forecast should also serve as good news for people with travel plans. And if the AAA 2018 Thanksgiving Travel Forecast is to be believed, there should be a lot of cars on the road and planes in the sky this week.

AAA projects that 54.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving, a 4.8 percent increase over last year. That number represents the highest Thanksgiving travel volume since 2005.

“Consumers have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season: higher wages, more disposable income and rising levels of household wealth,” Bill Sutherland, AAA Travel senior vice president, said in a statement. “This is translating into more travelers kicking off the holiday season with a Thanksgiving getaway, building on a positive year for the travel industry.”

AAA defines the Thanksgiving holiday period as Wednesday to Sunday.
