Meet Kita, a 1-year-old reticulated giraffe and the Indianapolis Zoo's newest addition

Meet Kita, a 1-year-old reticulated giraffe who's the Indianapolis Zoo's newest addition.

Welcome to Indianapolis, Kita!

The Indianapolis Zoo announced Wednesday that Kita, a female, 1-year-old reticulated giraffe, is its newest addition. She has been in Indianapolis since mid-October, and is now becoming acquainted with the zoo's three other giraffes behind the scenes, the zoo said.

Zoo guests will likely get to meet Kita (pronounced Kee-tah) in the spring, the zoo said. She is easily distinguishable from the other giraffes at the zoo because of her smaller size and lighter color, the zoo said. She stands at about 10 feet tall.

Indianapolis zookeepers say Kita has a relaxed personality and is very curious, and that she warmed up to feeders right away. Kita has been hand-fed while she and the other giraffes are spending the winter in a private, temperature-controlled facility.

Kita was born in Fort Wayne, and while she just recently moved to the Circle City, her family has history here: her father, Ezeji, was born at the Indianapolis Zoo in 2009, the zoo says.

The zoo's two other female giraffes — Takasa and AJ — are Kita's aunts.
