2 teens arrested in fatal shooting of Dollar General customer

Cumberland police arrested two teens after a man was shot to death during a what investigators suspect was botched robbery Monday night.

Gregory Raley was shot to death after he walked into the Dollar General store and interrupted a robbery, Cumberland Police Chief Michael Crooke said.

Raley, 37, died at the scene.

"I believe that our victim actually walked in on the robbery in progress of the Dollar General," Crooke said. "As a result of that, he ended up becoming a victim himself."

Additional officers were in the area because Cumberland businesses have seen a sharp increase in robberies.

An officer was about a block away and saw a suspect run from the store at 12046 E. Washington St.

Moments later, the officer heard a gunshot, Crooke said.

The officer radioed for backup and gave a description of the suspect. Police from Cumberland, Indianapolis and Hancock County set a quick perimeter around the area.

Soon, officers were questioning four young people ranging in age from 14 to 18, Crooke said.

The 14-year-old boy and another teen were arrested in connection with the robbery and shooting, Crooke said.

"It's horrible, horrible, horrible," said Crooke, a retired Indianapolis police homicide detective.

"I hate cases like this in December. No one ever wins, you know. The bad guys, they go to jail. The victim passes, now their family is without him."
