Indianapolis man convicted of murder in woman's stabbing

A man has been found guilty of murdering a 51-year-old woman found stabbed to death in her home on the north side last year, Indianapolis prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Jurors convicted Kelly Hudson, 40, of killing Catherine Dunaway after a two-day trial, Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry said in a news release.

The conviction comes more than a year after Dunaway's body was found in her apartment in the 3400 block of North Meridian Street on Nov. 3, 2017. An autopsy determined she died from a stab wound to the neck.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department saw Dunaway's body lying face down in the living room under a large pile of clothes. They also found bloody items in the home: a trash bag containing a bloody pillow and an empty ashtray on top of a blanket that was covering "a large amount" of blood on a chair in the living room, the release said.

Detectives located a witness who knew Hudson, prosecutors said in the release. She had introduced Dunaway to Hudson four days before the woman's death. After they met each other, Hudson began staying at Dunaway's apartment, the witness told authorities.

On the day before Dunaway's death, Hudson told the witness he believed Dunaway had stolen from him, the release said, and indicated he was going to get even.

Dunaway's body was later found by family members who were concerned about her well-being after not hearing from her for some time.

Investigators recovered 21 fingerprints matched to Hudson on various items at the apartment, prosecutors said. But Hudson denied to investigators that he knew Dunaway or had been inside the home.

A sentencing hearing has been set for Dec. 21.
