18-year-old charged with murder in Dollar General store robbery; 14-year-old also a suspect

An 18-year-old was charged Thursday with murder, after a Dollar General store robbery in Cumberland earlier this week that left a man dead.

Court records show Steven Sheppard was charged in Marion Superior Court with murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury in connection with the armed robbery on Monday night that ended in the killing of Gregory Raley.

A 14-year-old who police believe fatally shot Raley was held on preliminary charges of murder and robbery after his arrest, Cumberland police said Wednesday. It's unclear whether he will be formally charged. The Marion County prosecutor's office has said that any hearings involving the boy will be set before the Juvenile Court.

Authorities say Raley, 37, was killed after interrupting the robbery at 12046 E. Washington St. A probable cause affidavit says Sheppard had stood outside and prevented him from entering the store.

The victim was apparently concerned about someone inside the store, according to the affidavit. He approached the store with his hands up, saying "my old lady, my old lady," a Dollar General employee who witnessed the robbery told authorities. It's unclear who was in the store other than the manager and another employee.

Raley encountered the 14-year-old as the young teen was leaving the store, according to the affidavit.

The store's surveillance video reportedly shows Raley backing away from the suspect. That's when the boy shot Raley once, hitting him in the chest, before running toward a Pizza King restaurant, according to the affidavit.

Raley's girlfriend attempted life-saving measures on Raley while her daughter stood next to her, the affidavit said. It is unclear where she and her daughter were at the time of the shooting. Responding medics pronounced Raley dead at the scene.

An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police detective later located Sheppard walking on Washington Cove Way, according to the affidavit. The boy was apprehended after the detective saw him run from in between two houses and into a vehicle that had two males inside, the affidavit said. A handgun was allegedly found on him.

Sheppard is due in court on Friday. Records show he remains held at Marion County Jail.
