'Smiling' woman leads police on high-speed chase on Indiana Toll Road

A New Jersey woman is facing criminal charges after a high-speed chase on the Indiana Toll Road. It may have been the smile she gave police from behind the wheel of her Honda SUV — twice — before speeding off.

Indiana State Police finally stopped the driver by deploying stop sticks at the end of what ended up being a 20-mile chase with speeds of up to 100 mph.

According to Trooper Matthew Henson of the Indiana State Police, the chase began shortly before 3:50 p.m. Saturday in the westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road.

Henson  said he saw a red Honda HR-V traveling at a high rate of speed near the 105 mile marker, about 2 miles west of the Middlebury exit.

Henson was able to catch up to the Honda near the 100 mile marker, and he activated his squad car's emergency lights to make a traffic stop. He said that is when the woman sped up and continued west at a speed of more than 100 mph.

"A few miles into the pursuit, Henson pulled next to the Honda to motion for the driver to pull over," according to a statement from the ISP. "The driver reportedly looked over at Henson and smiled at him and continued (to) flee.

"Several miles later Henson pulled next to the driver again to attempt to get the driver to pull over and the driver again looked at Henson smiling."

As the pursuit continued, Trooper Timothy McCormick assisted by deploying stop sticks near the 81 mile marker, police said. The front driver's side tire of the Honda was safely deflated, and the woman, identified as 36-year-old Temple Jordan of Berlin, N.J. was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.

Jordan faces a preliminary charge of felony resisting law enforcement. He also received citations for her speed and driving on a suspended license.
