Man resists arrest, fires gun after car crash in Indianapolis

A 33-year-old man was arrested Sunday after allegedly fleeing the scene of a crash, firing a gun, resisting arrest and drug possession, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

About 3:18 p.m., a Marion County Sherrif's Deputy witnessed a car crash on East 16th Street and North Emerson Avenue in Indianapolis.

One of the drivers fled the scene on foot. After checking on an injured woman in the second vehicle, the deputy pursued the man, who was carrying a camouflage backpack, according to a news release.

"A passerby observed the suspect fleeing from the scene and tried to assist by tackling the subject," the news release states. "During the altercation, the suspect fired two shots."

The man was taken into custody after a short physical altercation with the deputy. A semi-automatic pistol, crack cocaine and methamphetamine were recovered at the scene, police say.

And the vehicle driven by the man was determined to be stolen, the release states.

The woman injured in the crash was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition.

Brian Wampner was arrested on suspicion of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, attempted aggravated assault, dealing in narcotics, possession of narcotics, leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury and resisting law enforcement.

The investigation by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is ongoing.
