Teen boy killed in Sunday shooting on Indianapolis' far east side, police say

A 17-year-old boy was killed during a shooting Sunday afternoon on Indianapolis' far east side.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police detectives are ruling the incident in the 3800 block of North Franklin Road near 34th Street a homicide.

According to a news release, the boy and a friend were walking when a vehicle drove by just before 3 p.m. and someone got out of the vehicle and fired a weapon, striking the 17-year-old boy. The shooter then got back in the vehicle and left.

It's unclear if the person who fired the weapon was the driver of the vehicle.

When officers arrived they saw "an unresponsive male victim with a gunshot wound along the road," the news release states.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Homicide detectives also responded to the scene and began gathering information from witnesses.

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency helped identify and collect potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will assist in determining the exact cause and manner of death. The MCCO will release the victim's name once his next of kin has been notified, the news release states.
