1 dead, 2 critically injured in southwest-side gas station shooting

One person died and two were critically injured Friday, after an altercation led to gunfire at a southwest-side gas station, Indianapolis police said.

The shooting happened outside a Marathon gas station in the 6400 block of South Mooresville Road, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer Genae Cook said. Officers responded to a report of a person shot in the area just before 2:30 p.m.

Police found three people who had been shot. Medics pronounced one man dead at the scene, and took two other men to area hospitals, Cook said.

One of the victims, who IMPD has not identified by name, is a 17-year-old boy from Camby, Indiana, according to a police report of the incident. Zackary Doss, 22 of Camby, and Kevin Jones, 55 of Indianapolis, are the other two victims.

The police report does not specify which of the victims died in the shooting, but the 17-year-old did not die, IMPD officer Aaron Hamer told IndyStar Saturday morning. IMPD does not identify juvenile victims, Hamer said.

Several people fled the scene on foot before police arrived, IMPD said. Three of them were found and detained for questioning. No one has been formally charged or arrested in the case, Hamer said Saturday.

Cook told reporters that an altercation involving a group of people who knew each other had happened earlier at a nearby location. Police would not say where that altercation happened.

The disturbance continued at the gas station, Cook said, and turned deadly when at least one person started shooting. Cook said it's unclear if there were multiple shooters.

The shooting happened near the entrance as people were walking in and out of the business, Cook said. However, no one else was hurt.
