Passengers on Delta Airlines Flight 500 from Indianapolis to Paris on Thursday got an unexpected visit to Detroit, after an "unruly passenger" caused the plane to divert.

The disturbance happened just after 6 p.m., according to a federal criminal complaint. About 40 minutes after boarding the flight bound for Charles de Gaulle Airport, authorities say Ian Robert James Morin began "yelling and acting erratically."

The flight crew tried to calm him down, the complaint said, but he continued to shout and not comply with their demands.

Morin then allegedly hit a flight attendant in the throat with an open hand. The complaint said he tried to hit the attendant a second time, then threw up on the aircraft.

A spokeswoman for the Detroit Metro Airport said security personnel on board were able to restrain the passenger until the plane landed. Several passengers also helped the flight crew restrain Morin until he was put into flex-cuffs, the complaint said. He remained secured until the plane arrived at about 8 p.m. at the Detroit Metro Airport, where he was removed from the flight.

The "unruly passenger" was then taken into custody, she said, and the matter has been turned over to the FBI.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Detroit told IndyStar that Morin is from Carmel, Indiana. He appeared in Detroit federal court on Friday afternoon and was released on bond.

The flight's other passengers were put in hotels overnight and continued to Charles de Gaulle Airport on Friday morning, a spokesman for Delta Airlines told IndyStar.

Delta apologized for the delay and inconvenience caused to the other passengers. They were scheduled to land about 14 hours after their original arrival time. The flight from Indianapolis to Paris takes roughly eight hours, according to Google Flights
