Indianapolis crime: Man found in car with fatal gunshot wound near Fountain Square

Indianapolis police are investigating after a man was fatally shot early Sunday near Fountain Square. 

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting happened in a vehicle shortly after 2:30 a.m. in the area of English Avenue and Laurel Street. Police learned that the vehicle was still driving after the incident. 

IMPD officers were able to make contact with the driver and pull the vehicle over at the intersection of Calvary Street and Fletcher Avenue, police said.

An adult male passenger with an apparent gunshot wound was located and pronounced dead at the scene by medics after life-saving efforts were unsuccessful. Homicide detectives responded to the scene and began speaking with witnesses.  

Information about how the shooting occurred has not been released, nor has the victim's name. Police believe the shooting to be an isolated incident.

The Marion County Coroner will determine the victim's exact manner and cause of death.
