Indianapolis crime: 1 dead in shooting outside east-side burger shop

Indianapolis police are investigating after an early Sunday shooting outside of an east-side hamburger restaurant that left one man dead.

According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials, the shooting happened shortly after 2 a.m. in the 5900 block of Massachusetts Avenue. Officers were called to the scene when a witness reported someone being shot in the parking lot of Big Dan's Hamburgers. 

Officers arrived and found an unresponsive male outside the business suffering at least one gunshot wound, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives responded and immediately began canvassing the area for witnesses. The Marion County Coroner’s Office is assisting and will determine the exact manner and cause of death.
