Police union calls decision to scrap gunshot detection system 'short-sighted'

2 children shot within hours in Indianapolis, 1 while walking to bus stop

A 17-year-old boy was shot while walking to a school bus stop Tuesday morning on the east side, police said.

The teen was shot shortly after 6 a.m. near Linwood Avenue and East Washington Street, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Genae Cook said. He then ran home and told his mother he had been shot before passing out, IMPD said.

He was unable to tell police what happened and was taken to an area hospital, where he underwent surgery, Cook said.

Police had not identified a suspect in the shooting as of Tuesday afternoon.

A 2-year-old was later shot less than a mile away from the bus stop shooting. Shortly after 8:15 a.m., Cook said, the child was shot in the hand or wrist area in the 400 block of North Bradley Avenue.

Additional details about the shooting have not been released, but officials said the 2-year-old is in stable condition.
