Indianapolis man charged with killing 2, including woman who had hands up, court docs say

Corrections & clarifications: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated which suspect prosecutors believe drove the vehicle. Prosecutors believe Terrell Redd drove the vehicle away from the shooting scene, according to a probable-cause affidavit.

Court documents say Shainita Caffey was on the phone with Indianapolis Power & Light Co. when the shots rang out.

Caffey, 25, stated her first and last name into the phone, and then can be heard screaming, "Oh my God!"

"I have a daughter! I have a daughter! I have a," she yelled. More shots were fired as she went silent.

Around 3 p.m. Aug. 5, Caffey was in a black GMC Terrain on North Tibbs Avenue near Lafayette Road with Miles Cross, 26, when two men exited a silver Kia Forte behind them. The driver of the Kia approached the driver's side of the GMC, where Cross was sitting, and fired five times, according to a probable-cause affidavit in the case.

Caffey exited the vehicle and fell to the ground. She put her hands up. The shooter walked over to her, put the gun close to her head, and fired three times, according to the affidavit.

Video from an IndyGo bus captured the shooting, court documents say.

Caffey and Cross were taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died. On Wednesday, police said two men had been arrested in connection with their deaths.

Dwayne Lucas (left) and Terrell Redd

Dwayne Lucas and Terrell Redd, both 31, were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Caffey and Cross, police said.

Lucas faces two charges of murder and one charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, according to online court records. He was previously convicted of armed robbery, intimidation and carrying a handgun without a license, according to court records.

Redd faces a felony charge of assisting a criminal, records said.

Prosecutors believe Lucas fired the shots, and that Redd drove the vehicle away from the shooting scene, according to the affidavit. Both men have been booked into the Marion County Jail.

Lucas has a hearing scheduled for Oct. 11 at 9 a.m., according to online jail records. Redd has a hearing scheduled for Nov. 19.
