He was convicted of fatally shooting a man when he was 17. Now he will serve 75 years.

An Indianapolis man was sentenced Thursday to 75 years in prison  after a jury found him guilty of fatally shooting a man when he was 17 years old.

Dewayne Harris, 19, was convicted of murder in the Sept. 29, 2017, killing of 22-year-old James Butler. Police and medics found Butler resting against a fence around 7 p.m. in the 500 block of West 28th Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Butler was visiting an acquaintance who was playing a dice game in the backyard of the residence, according to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office. While Butler was there, Harris and others expressed interest in how much money Butler had.

Butler's girlfriend told police he had a couple thousand dollars. A witness told police Butler was there to sell drugs to one of the people present.

Butler was beginning to leave when Harris placed a handgun at Butler's back, leading to a gunfight, according to court documents. Butler was then shot, and Harris ran away with the money.

At the time of the shooting, Harris was on GPS monitoring for an ongoing criminal case in Jackson County, the prosecutor's office said. Data from the GPS monitor placed him in the area Butler was killed at the time the shooting occurred.

Harris was ordered to serve 55 years in the Indiana Department of Correction for the murder charge. He was sentenced to an additional 20 years for a felony firearm use sentencing enhancement, according to the prosecutor's office.
