Kroger to sell CBD products in Indiana

Kroger will begin selling topical products infused with CBD at 89 Indiana locations before the end of June, a company spokesperson told IndyStar. 

"Like many retailers, we are offering our customers a highly-curated selection of topical products like lotions, balms, oils and creams that are infused with hemp-derived CBD," the company said in an emailed statement. "CBD is a naturally-occurring and non-intoxicating compound that has promising benefits and is permitted within federal and state regulations. Our limited selection of hemp-derived CBD topical products is from suppliers that have been reviewed for quality and safety."

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of many compounds — called cannabinoids — found in cannabis sativa. It is extracted from the hemp variety, which has no or only trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound that produces the mind-altering "high" associated with marijuana.

Proponents of CBD laud the substance's perceived health benefits, but some scientists question whether it does the things proponents believe it does.

CBD has been legal in Indiana since March 2018. when Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a measure legalizing low-THC cannabidiol oil in Indiana. The law allows anyone to buy, sell and possess CBD oil, as long as it meets certain labeling requirements and contains no more than 0.3% THC.

Since then, CVS has begun selling it in its stores, and Green Growth Brands of Columbus, Ohio, opened a shop at Castleton Square Mall, with more Indiana locations to follow.

A nationwide CBD Expo also made an Indianapolis stop in March. Vendors at the expo sold CBD-infused products such as ice cream, lotion, pet treats and beard oil.
