Hamilton County dominates latest ranking of safest cities in Indiana

Hamilton County continues to top rankings of the safest cities in Indiana, taking the top three spots in the latest report.

SafeHome.org named Carmel the safest city in Indiana in its new report, which the security system review website said heavily considered 2015 FBI data on violent and property crime. Fishers ranked second and Westfield ranked third on the list.

According to the report, Carmel has one police officer for every 655 citizens — a lower ratio than it reports for the other Hamilton County cities. Fishers has one for every 791 residents, and Westfield has one for every 833 people, it said.

Rounding out the top five safest cities are Valparaiso and Portage, making Carmel the largest city in the top five. The study only considered cities with a population of at least 32,000.

Indianapolis took the bottom spot on the list, ranking 25th.

Carmel and Fishers both also made the website's national list, the only Indiana cities to do so. Carmel ranked No. 34 out of the 101 safest cities in the country, according to the report. Fishers ranked No. 51.

Greenwich, Connecticut, was named the safest city in the country, with a population of  nearly 63,000 and one officer for every 351 residents.

This is just the latest "safest city" title for Carmel, which last month was ranked No. 39 in the 100 safest cities in the country by SafeWise, a review and comparison website for home safety products and companies.

Last year, Carmel also made WalletHub's list of 'Best Small Cities in America' list and won Niche's A-plus rating and top ranking in its list of 2018 Best Places to Live in America.
