Officials are warning Hoosiers who have already spent much of the weekend sweating it out and sticking to the shade to brace for even stickier conditions Sunday as the heat and humidity take things to the next level.

And while you're searching for a way to stay cool, don't forget to grab the galoshes.

According to a special weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service, Sunday afternoon is poised deliver triple-digit heat indexes and severe storms that could yield dangerous results.

A heat advisory that went into effect at 1 p.m. will remain active until 8 p.m. The forecast calls for temperatures in the mid 90s with heat index values as high as 105 degrees.

The National Weather Service advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, avoid the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

"Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening," according to a National Weather Service statement. "Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible."

In addition to the heat, a cold front moving into the Indianapolis area brings with it possible thunderstorms. Sunday's forecast calls for a 20% chance of storms during the day, and a 50% chance of storms at night.

If storms emerge, residents should prepare for wind gusts of up to 50 mph that could cause property damage or power outages, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters also warned about the possibility of frequent lightning as well as flooding with this storm.

If lightning strikes nearby, seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. If a roadway is flooded, turn around and seek an alternate route.

Storms are most likely to arrive between 3 p.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday.
