Indy-area HS boys basketball roundup, Feb. 15

Here is a roundup of Friday night's boys basketball action from around Central Indiana:

► It was No. 1 vs. No. 2 in a rematch of last year's Class 4A state title. And on Friday night, it was Carmel who prevailed, exacting a little bit of revenge on its way to an outright MIC title. IndyStar Preps Insider Kyle Neddenriep was there and filed this game report.

BROWNSBURG 70, HAMILTON SE 54

Brownsburg shut down Hamilton Southeastern defensively most of the night, securing a 70-54 victory and second place finish in the Hoosier Heritage Conference on senior night.

Down 16 with less than a minute to go in the third quarter, Hamilton Southeastern went on a 12-2 run to bring the game within 6 points with 5:12 left in the fourth quarter. But the Bulldogs responded, outscoring the Royals 23-20 in the final quarter.

“I thought the kids really responded at every turn,” Brownsburg head coach Steve Lynch said. “Every time there was a bit of adversity or they made a little bit of a run, our guys found an answer to it.”

Outside of the late Royals run, Brownsburg dominated on both ends of the floor, utilizing 11 scorers and holding Hamilton Southeastern’s leading scorer Aaron Etherington – who finished with five points after hitting his first basket with 1:30 left – scoreless for most of the night.

The Bulldogs utilized an 11-point run in the first quarter to establish control and went into halftime up 14. Senior Reis Thomas led the early offensive effort, hitting three 3’s and scoring 11 of his 16 points in the game in the first half.

“The past three years we’ve won all of our senior nights, so it’s just different kind of (sic), everyone was locked in, including myself,” Thomas said. “I think that was what contributed to me having that success on the offensive end.”

Junior Malek Edmonds eclipsed Thomas’ point total, scoring a game-high 19 after putting up 15 second-half points. Sophomore Pierce Thomas had eight, senior Ryan Wiggins had seven and recent Alabama A&M commit Cameron Alford finished with five.

All but two of the Bulldogs varsity roster scored, including senior Jason Meeks who made his first basket of the season on a last-second 3-pointer, bringing Brownsburg fans to their feet in the process.

For Hamilton Southeastern, junior Chris Grubbs led with 13 points while Noah Smith, who scored all his points in the second half, finished with 10.

It was a bounce-back win for Brownsburg who lost to Noblesville, 39-36 on the road a week ago. The Bulldogs are 10-2 in their last 12 games.

“It’s a huge confidence booster, of course, especially after last week we had that loss,” Reis Thomas said. “Especially Knowing we can play against a zone that successfully on the offensive end, that’s something we’ve been working on a lot recently.”

ZIONSVILLE 48, FISHERS 44

Zionsville overcame first-half shooting struggles to win its fourth Hoosier Crossroads Conference title in a row, defeating Fishers 48-44.

Purdue recruit Isaiah Thompson led all scorers with 24 points, scoring 20 of those in the second half after shooting 1-of-6 in the first half and 2-of-6 from the free throw line.

“Fishers played us as tough as anyone this season, but we missed a lot of shots,” said Zionsville coach Shaun Busick. “When I remember we were down 21 to HSE (Hamilton Southeastern), none of us panicked. I knew we could come back.”

Zionsville (17-5) struggled as a team in the first half, shooting 4-of-19, including missing all six three-point attempts. The Eagles kept themselves in the game by forcing turnovers while only committing six of their own.

“When you take care of the ball like we did and get to the free-throw line that was the difference in the ballgame,” said Busick.

In the second half the Eagles shot 7-of-11 in the third quarter, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Three of those long-distance hits came from Thompson.

“They kept Isaiah down with the trap in the first half, so we made some changes and he got going in the third," Busick said.

Second half adjustments aren’t an issue for the Eagles, who are led by six seniors.

“We have a great veteran leadership here,” said Busick. “There was no yelling in the locker room. We just go in there and discuss what we need to do then go out and get it done.

Freshman 6-5 center Jeffrey Simmons led Fishers (15-7) with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting.

This win marks Busick’s 200th win as coach at Zionsville.

“It’s really a testament to the players in this program.” he said. “Not only guys like Isaiah but everyone who shows up.”

Winning four straight conference championships is not an easy feat, but it’s not something that this team is ready to celebrate yet.

“We still have games to play,” said Thompson. “Winning the conference is nice, but the goal is to play into late March and win the last game at Bankers Life.”

While the celebration will be on hold, the accomplishment is not lost on Busick.

“We will celebrate it,” he said. “Winning four in a row is tough, now we’ll try to go win a state title. Next year we will come back and try to win a fifth.”
