Indianapolis weather: Winter storm leaves slick roads in Central Indiana

Sleet and snow overnight left slush-covered roads and slow driving in many parts of Central Indiana this morning.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory at about 6:50 a.m. warning of slick roads throughout Indianapolis and surrounding areas. The advisory expires at 10 a.m.

Many area schools, including Indianapolis Public Schools, are on a two-hour delay this morning.

An Indiana State Police officer was hurt when his squad car was struck by another vehicle on I-70 near Emerson Avenue about 5:10 a.m.

Sgt. John Perrine said Officer Andrew Atwell was helping another State Police officer change a tire when his squad car was rear-ended. The driver was ticketed for failing to yield to a stopped emergency vehicle, Perrine said.

An Indiana State Police officer was hurt Wednesday morning when his squad car was struck by another vehicle on I-70 near Emerson Avenue.

In the two years Atwell's been on the force, Perrine said this is the fourth time he has been inside his vehicle when it was struck on the highway.

Atwell was hospitalized with back pain, Perrine said.

The ice will melt away as temperatures warm to a high of about 42 degrees. Expect partly sunny skies  and a high of about 41 degrees Thursday; mostly sunny with a high of 45 on Friday.
