FARGO — A Moorhead man injured in an alleged drug deal that turned into a fatal shooting earlier this month in north Fargo has been charged with murder.

Lee Arthur Fry Jr., 29, pleaded not guilty Tuesday, May 26, in Cass County District Court to multiple charges, including a Class AA felony count of murder that carries a maximum punishment of life in prison. The charges stem from the May 12 shooting near Hornbacher’s, 2510 Broadway N., that left 39-year-old Anquine Lamont White, of Fargo, dead.

Court documents allege White and 28-year-old Darrell Lamont Simmons of Fargo were trying to buy meth from Fry and Reng Zechariah Ayong, 21, also of Fargo, in a parking lot near the north Fargo Hornbacher’s. Simmons was told to retrieve a bag from the trunk of a car they were all sitting in, according to court documents.

Ayong was driving the vehicle, and White and Fry were in the back seat, Simmons told investigators. When Simmons got out, the car drove away erratically, he said in court documents. Several gunshots were fired in the vehicle before it crashed, according to court documents.

Fry and Ayong fled the scene of the crash, but Fry was later found with a gunshot wound, court documents said. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for the injuries.

White, who also was found with multiple gunshot wounds inside the car, died at the scene.

Ayong and Fry both face the same set of charges: murder; a Class A felony of conspiracy to commit robbery; Class C felonies of reckless endangerment, theft while in possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of firearm; and misdemeanor theft.

Simmons is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance, a Class B felony.
