FARGO — Land at one of the key entrances to Fargo near the Red River and the Veterans Memorial Bridge is for sale.
The Fargo City Commission on Monday night, Feb. 11, approved asking for proposals from groups looking to buy and develop a portion of the site along Main Avenue, near Second Street South, where the Park East Apartments once stood.
On part of the parcel, a flood-control project is underway that will add a lift station and dike to the downtown protection zone. The Park East Apartments were razed to make way for the dike.
But the remaining part of the land, measuring about 54,000 square feet, is not needed and is now for sale with a minimum price on the land of $541,000.
City Commissioner John Strand wondered if that area was a part of the downtown development plan because of its high visibility as an entrance to Fargo.

City Strategic Planning and Research Director Jim Gilmour said it was not targeted for a public purpose at that location. He foresees possibly a mix of uses for the site with an attractive building for businesses or residences.
Gilmour added that he's fielded several calls from developers interested in the land, with its proximity to a high-traffic entrance to the city. The land will be available starting Aug. 1 once the flood-control project is completed.
