Fargo fire has plan in place for crane collapses

FARGO — In light of two recent deadly crane collapses in the United States, it might be tough not to wonder how the two cranes towering over downtown Fargo's Block 9 development would hold up in severe weather.

A deadly crane collapse in Dallas Sunday left one woman dead which marks the second fatal crane accident in the past month. In early May, a construction crane collapse in downtown Seattle which also lead to fatalities.

Fire Battalion Chief Joe Mangin says there are teams in place to respond to these types of accidents.

"So in the event of a collapse of a crane, or really any incident where we have a collapse, protocol is to send our technical rescue team. We have a group of 11 individuals working today who are specifically trained to respond to collapse rescue situations."

Mangin says although there is no way to prevent the rare occurrence of a crane from falling, there are certain warning signs residents and shops can see before an accident happens.
