Letter: Chief Todd left Fargo a better place

I have lived in Fargo since 1982 and during that time served a combined 26 years in the North Dakota State Senate and Fargo City Commission as well as numerous local and national boards and task forces.

During my civic tenure, I strived to keep a pulse on issues impacting our community and our future. Specifically, growth strategies that create a safe environment for residents to work, live and play have always been top priorities of mine. I have been blessed with many experiences which have allowed me the opportunity to learn from with some talented and amazing leaders.

David Todd is one of those leaders, who in my opinion, has demonstrated unwavering leadership and commitment to the city of Fargo. I also believe Fargo residents have appreciated his dedication and professionalism as a law enforcement leader and are thankful for his service.

As chief of police, Todd’s tenure and leadership have made a lasting positive impact on Fargo and the state of North Dakota. His results-driven leadership style led to improving the internal and external culture of the department, instilling an inclusive leadership model, practicing education-based disciplines, an intelligence-led policing model and the development of a sound strategic plan with documented real success indicators.

Additionally, his leadership created community engagement for neighborhood meetings, emphasis on community-oriented policing and robust social media engagement and interaction which is expected from all police department employees. The departments community engagement team consists of community trust officers, cultural liaison officers and school resource officers. These efforts in partnership with many other organizations assist with youth and outreach programs that include the juvenile diversion programs. Efforts like these over time built trust and respect with the residents of Fargo.

As our community, state and nation navigate through a very challenging period in time, let’s not forget our basic forms of government, respect for citizen involvement as well as recognize and appreciate leaders who know the difference between right and wrong. Todd is that type of leader.

I wish Dave the very best with his retirement.
