Mr Pattinson’s housing career began in local government in Dudley and then in Rotherham, where he met David Butler, later chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), who became a lifelong friend. The two men served on the CIH Council together for many years.

Mr Pattinson moved to North British Housing Association (NBHA), now Places for People, where he spent 20 years in senior positions before leaving to become chief executive of Staffordshire Housing Association in 2001.

He left Staffordshire Housing Association in 2004 and in his later years was involved in the voluntary sector in Manchester. During his retirement he indulged his passions for vintage car rallying in his MGB sports car and touring the UK in his campervan.

Mr Butler said: “Colin was a great enthusiast, [and he] always took on more than anyone could sensibly cope with. He was huge fun.”

Eric Armitage, who was chief executive of NBHA when Mr Pattinson worked there, added: “Colin will always be remembered for his many achievements at NBHA across the regions, including in regeneration and stock transfer projects.

“One part of his legacy was to suggest the new name Places for People when David Cowans arrived on the scene.”

Diane Lea, who succeeded Colin at Staffordshire Housing Association, said: “Colin gave so much to the housing sector and cared deeply about what we did.”
