Green light expected for £63.5m relief road

A £63.5m road which will partially bypass Melton Mowbray could be approved later this week after the green light was recommended.

The 7km single carriageway Melton Mowbray Distributor Road is set to be voted on by Leicestershire County Council on Thursday 23 May.

If approved, it will pass to the north and east of the town.

The plans also include a re-alignment of the River Eye and six new roundabouts.

If the go-ahead is granted, work would start next year and be completed in 2022.

According to planning documents, the proposed route would run from the A606, Nottigham Road, and would cross Scalford Road, Melton Spinney Road and the A607, Thorpe Road, before re-joining Burton Road, the A606.

The Department for Transport approved a £49.5m grant for the scheme in May 2018 while the county council and Melton Borough Council have also contributed.
