Funding pledged to support East Midlands housing schemes

More than £13m has been pledged to help support the construction of in excess of 1,000 homes in Leicestershire.

The £13.2m funding has been provided to Leicestershire County Council by Homes England and will go towards building 1,083 properties.

The scheme forms part of a wider project to construct almost 3,000 homes and business space in the county.

The 550-acre development on land east of Lutterworth would include 2,750 new homes and would generate 2,500 jobs, the county council has said.

Homes England has also provided £2.1m to City of Lincoln Council to build 52 properties while High Peak Borough Council has been given £467,688 towards 82 houses.

The government agency has agreed deals with 12 councils to help provide 4,000 homes across England.

The funding, which totals £55, has been awarded through the government's £450m Local Authority Accelerated Construction Programme.

The money for Leicestershire County Council will help to open up a 44-acre site to develop 649 new homes in Lutterworth - part of bigger plans to develop 2,750 new homes currently being considered by Harborough District Council.

It will also provide £4.4m towards infrastructure costs to support develop 290 homes on a site to the north of Melton Mowbray, close to the A606 Nottingham Road and support the redevelopment of land for 144 new houses in Snibston, Coalville, as well as wider regeneration of the area.

Council leader Cllr Nick Rushton said: "This is excellent news. Leicestershire is growing and planning ahead to ensure communities have the right roads and infrastructure in the right place.

"By working with government to secure vital funds, we’re unlocking millions of pounds to invest in much-needed new homes, infrastructure and regeneration."

Kit Malthouse MP, minister of state for housing, added: "We haven’t built enough homes in this country for far too long – and our accelerated construction programme is here to change that, and fast.

"This £13.2m funding boost is going to help bring 1,000 new homes to Leicestershire using modern methods that significantly cut down on construction time.

"The Midlands is an important part of our drive to keep building more, better, faster and meet our ambition to build 300,000 homes a year nationally by the mid-2020s."
