Thumbs-up for £63.5m relief road

The thumbs-up have been given for a £63.5m road which will partially bypass Melton Mowbray.

The 7km single carriageway Melton Mowbray Distributor Road was voted through by Leicestershire County Council on Thursday 23 May.

The new road will pass to the north and east of the town.

The plans also include a re-alignment of the River Eye and six new roundabouts.

Work is expected to start next year and be completed in 2022.

According to planning documents, the proposed route would run from the A606, Nottigham Road, and would cross Scalford Road, Melton Spinney Road and the A607, Thorpe Road, before re-joining Burton Road, the A606.

The Department for Transport approved a £49.5m grant for the scheme in May 2018 while the county council and Melton Borough Council have also contributed.
