Plans in for hundreds of Northumberland homes

Outline plans have been lodged proposing the development of a 'lifetime neighbourhood' in Northumberland, which could comprise hundreds of new homes.

The site earmarked for the scheme lies to the east and west of Bedside Furnace Road in Blyth and currently comprises parcels of land used for agricultural and equestrian purposes.

It was the subject of a screening opinion for up to 350 dwellings in 2016.

As well as 327 homes, the proposals also include more than 21,500 sq ft of commercial floor space, parking provision and landscaping.

A statement submitted to Northumberland County Council by JT Planning said the project would "accommodate a wide range of housing needs".

It added that the construction work alone could generate £24m in investment over five years, with the new housing generating a net spend of approximately £3m per year for local shops and facilities.

It could also sustain dozens of construction jobs, while the retail element of the scheme would create 20 full-time jobs.

Fifty of the 327 homes – or 15 per cent – are expected to be affordable.

The planning statement added: "It has been evidenced that the proposal will provide a sustainable form of development in an accessible location."
