Plans to build a huge job-creating leisure facility in Cheshire look set to be approved next week.
The application concerns Congleton Leisure Centre, which has stood since 1973 when the original pool hall was constructed, with the addition of the sports hall and reception area effectively linking the two main buildings.
The pool hall fabric is considered to be "very much at the end of its lifecycle", while the pools themselves have been surveyed, highlighting that the construction "does not meet modern standards.
As such, proposals have been submitted to demolish a large part of the site on the Worrall Street side, comprising the main and smaller secondary pool, changing rooms, toilets and offices at ground floor level and a sauna, store rooms and a swimming pool viewing area at above and at the first floor.
This would be replaced with additional parking provision.
An extension, not dissimilar in scale to the footprint of the area to be demolished, would then be built on the eastern side. This would include two pools, changing facilities, a café area with seating and storage at ground-floor level and studios, storage rooms and an upper element to a soft play area at the first floor.
The work would allow for five full-time and one part-time jobs initially, with the business expecting that to expand further.
On completion of the project the centre anticipates an increase in new members and those attending for general sessions.
"The development will not only provide additional public facilities but address the poor state of repair of the existing external façade," said a design and access statement. "This will bring the building in line with its surrounding and improve the street scene."
The proposals have been recommended for approval ahead of Cheshire East Council's planning committee meeting on 13 March.
