Swansea Council to hold further discussions over £70m property investment

Swansea Council is to hold further discussions with potential investors on the £70m Swansea Central Phase Two project following MIPIM, with Cardiff's delegation also hailing the event as a success.

Swansea Central Phase Two, which has outline planning permission, could include a 2,150,000 sq ft public sector office hub, almost 150 apartments, a cinema, restaurants and retail units.

When built, the second phase would complement the neighbouring £120m Swansea Central Phase One which included a 3,500-capacity arena and is due to be built in the next two years.

The council plans to be an anchor tenant for about a third of the commercial space and is in negotiation with other public bodies for the remainder.

Council leader Rob Stewart said: "We saw many investors at MIPIM 2019 in France when we showcased our world-class scheme.

"Around 50,000 people attended the show, the biggest of its kind in the world, and we will now pursue follow-up discussions with a number of credible companies we met.

"We had many discussions and made many new contacts. Many of those we met were impressed by the vision and ambition of Swansea; it was a positive experience."

Cardiff, and the Cardiff Capital Region was also present.

Leader of Cardiff Council, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: "MIPIM gave us an opportunity to see what other cities around the world are doing to attract investment and to measure ourselves against the best of the rest.

"We are competing in a global marketplace and we need to be seen and to be heard in that marketplace, especially now with Brexit on the horizon. Cardiff Council is doing sterling work attracting companies and well-paid jobs to the city, but we can’t rest for a moment.

"The investment world needs to hear about Cardiff and it needs to hear the great story we have to tell about our capital. MIPIM is an enabler which helps you do that. We are competing against major world cities and we are punching above our weight. It was pleasing to see the buzz we were able to create about Cardiff.

"The Capital City Region joining us on the trip also helped us sell south east Wales to prospective investors. Of course when you attend these things you have to make sure your time is used in the right way.

"You are out there to meet and greet, to tell and to sell everything that’s great and different about your city. I think we did that and we also made what I hope will prove to be some very valuable investor contacts in the process."
