Thumbs up for new Cardiff retail park

Plans to knock down a store on Cardiff's Newport Road to make way for a new retail park have been given the green light.

The site at 507 Newport Road is currently occupied by a What! Superstore, associated car park and a servicing area.

The proposed mixed-use retail park - known as Newport Road Retail Park - would include four units with a total floorspace of more than 40,700 sq ft and 5,866 sq ft of external sales areas.

Plans also include car parking, access, landscaping and associated works.

The largest unit on the development will be occupied by DIY chain Wickes. The store will consolidate the company's existing two branches in the city and will also comprise an external garden centre.

Other units will be occupied by veterinary chain The Vet and Metro Bank and the scheme will also feature a drive-through operator.

The plans – approved by Cardiff City Council earlier this week - were designed by Holder Mathias Architects on behalf of applicant W Wing Yip (London) Ltd.

It could create approximately 62 full-time equivalent jobs.

A planning statement by WYG Planning & Environment said the scheme is located within a highly accessible location and utilises previously developed land".

"It is surrounded by other retail uses and will benefit from the likelihood of linked trips," it added.
