Northumberland retail development given green light

Planners have given the green light to the development of five retail units, as well as two food and drink drive-thru units, on land to the south-west of Morrisons in Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

The plans, which were submitted by TCD Estates and Berwick-Upon-Tweed Corporation (Freemen) Trustees last year, involve the erection of seven units in total, along with access, parking and landscaping.

Several companies have already been allocated to the units, including Home Bargains, The Food Warehouse, KFC, Aldi and Costa coffee.

The land is adjacent to an existing commercial development at Loaning Meadows, where there is an existing Morrisons food store with filling station, Travel Lodge and McDonalds, with the application site mainly being agricultural fields.

Northumberland County Council issued the decision to grant approval earlier this week.

A report that was scrutinised by the strategic planning committee said: "The proposal has demonstrated that there are no sequentially preferable sites to accommodate the development and that the trade impact of the proposal would have an impact on the town centre, however within the framework of assessment this level is not considered be a ‘significant adverse impact’ on the vitality or viability of the town centre.
