PLANS to transform a key part of Inverness city centre’s shopping landscape has left traders fearing for their future livelihoods.

A meeting between the manager Jo Murray and businesses from the “market hall” section of the Victorian Market last week set out proposals for redevelopment understood to include the creation of more food and drink-oriented businesses and a new performance space allowing for the provision of live entertainment.

An action plan aiming to revitalise the shopping arcade as a potential “jewel in the crown” of Inverness’s retail experience was launched by Highland Council in 2017.

Alarmed traders who contacted us in the wake of the recent meeting, however, said they had been given no assurances over their long-term future at the gathering.

None were prepared to be named, out of fears their comments could impact on their businesses, but the development plans as they stand at present are understood to involve a reduction in the number of individual units from their current 19 to 15.
