AN Inverness councillor has made a plea for vigilance following two fires in the city.

Councillor Isabelle MacKenzie said the blazes on consecutive days in Diriebught Court showed that people needed to be mindful of what was happening around them, to keep themselves safe.

The first was reported shortly before 1pm last Wednesday and the second was at around 3.50pm at a neighbouring property on the following day.

James MacLean, who lives in Diriebught Court, said: “It is very worrying, two deliberate fires in two days.

“We think that the fires were started in the first house deliberately, but by mistake in the wrong property.

“The following day the same person, we think, came to the right house this time and started the fire.

“We just wish we knew who it was so that we could report him or her.”

Mr MacLean, a cleaning supervisor, continued: “There has been a lot of trouble up in this area recently and it is not good news that things have now got out of control.”

Cllr MacKenzie said: “Following from the fire at Diriebught Court there is some comfort that no-one was injured. I would urge the public to come forward with any information.

“They can do so anonymously if they need to.

“If the residents in the area have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with myself or other councillors.

“As we’re easing lockdown, please be mindful of what is happening around you, keep well and safe.”

Police in Inverness are treating both fires as deliberate.

Anyone who may have information or who may have seen any suspicious activity around Diriebught Court or the surrounding area is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
