INVERNESS railway station was overflowing with rail enthusiasts when the iconic Flying Scotsman paid a visit as part of a journey along the Highland Mainline.

The 96-year-old steam engine arrived in the Highland capital on Friday evening as part of a nine-day trip organised by the custodians of the train, The Steam Dreams Rail Co and Riley’s Engineering.

While it had been due to leave again on Sunday its stay in Inverness proved longer than that after what was described as a minor tubing problem meant that it had to wait to be repaired before heading south again.

The Flying Scotsman was originally built in Doncaster for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), emerging from the works in February 1923.

It last visited Inverness in 2000.
