A man and a woman have been arrested after a high-speed car chase through Inverness this morning.

Eyewitnesses saw police officers lay down a road trap, known as a stinger, to stop the car at the Dores roundabout, before the driver got out and ran away from officers into the Holm area of the city.

A stinger is a line of spikes on a chain that is designed for police to stop a high-speed car chase safely.

Police said that a man and a woman, both aged 20, have since been detained.

Eyewitnesses said that up to 13 police vehicles were involved in bringing the car to a halt.

One man told the Courier: "It was crazy at Holm roundabout. 13 police cars initially heading out the Dores road but then came back into town at speed. They seemed to be chasing a car."

He continued: "The car was stopped by what looks like a stinger. It’s abandoned just at the junction of Dores Road and Drumfield Road.

"It's tyres are flat, and driver's window smashed in."

A police spokeswoman said: “At around 11.40am, a car was stopped by police in Dores Road.

“The male driver, aged 20, and his female passenger, aged 20, have been arrested and detained in police custody in relation to an earlier incident in the Inverfarigaig area.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
