A TOUCHING memorial honouring the fallen soldiers of the Queen’s Own Highlanders could be erected overlooking the River Ness.

Plans have been lodged with Highland Council to place the bronze figure in Bank Street in front of the Mercure Hotel.

The statue which stands at over 7ft, depicts a soldier clad in ceremonial dress.

It will be placed on top of a plinth that will carry the names of the regiment’s 14 officers and soldiers who died in service.

James Murray, chairman of the Queen’s Own Highlanders’ Regional Association which has submitted the application, said: “We were very much an Inverness regiment.

“Inverness was our biggest recruiting base, and we felt it was important that the regiment doesn’t get totally forgotten.”

The association has commissioned Edinburgh artist Alan B Herriot to design the statue, which will then be finished by Nairn-based Black Isle Bronze.

Herriot’s work includes a sculpture of Robert the Bruce on horseback at Marischal College in Aberdeen, and a Highland Division piper situated at the House of Bruar in Perthshire.

Mr Murray added it was important for the association to have the hot bronze work carried out locally.

If approved, it is hoped the lone soldier will be in place by September.

The cost of the statue, which is expected to be in excess of £65,000, will be met by the association.
