A furious row has erupted over controversial plans to install additional barriers in a busy Inverness city centre street creating what business leaders describe as a "no-go" area.

It is the latest twist in the long-running saga of the former Eastgate Hostel where demolition finally started earlier this month to demolish the eyesore six years after a blaze gutted the building.

Despite previous reassurances disruption would be kept to a minimum, it has now emerged a section of Eastgate is to be cordoned off on health and safety grounds to enable the contractors to take a skip in and out of the site.

Although the early morning skip change lasts for the maximum of one hour, Highland Council wants metal barriers in place between Marks & Spencer and the businesses opposite for the duration of the work which is expected to take 12 weeks.
