Euan Stewart from 1st Battalion the Highlanders’ Inverness detachment has been appointed the battalion’s new Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM).

The 17-year-old who joined the youth organisation five years ago is being championed for his long list of achievements.

Graeme Wells from the army cadet force said the high flying cadet has climbed right up the ranks to completed his Master Cadet, which is the highest a cadet can reach.

On top of his cadet achievements he has also had the honour of being the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet of Inverness-shire.

This position allowed him to assist the Lord Lieutenant of Inverness-shire, Donald Cameron of Lochiel, in his duties as Her Majesty The Queen’s appointed representative for the area.

Mr Wells said Mr Stewart was also an “excellent shooter” who has represented the battalion on several occasions in regional and national shooting competitions, including the Inter-Service Cadet Rifle meeting at Bisley Ranges in Surrey.

Last year he scooped the battalion its first trophy in this contest, coming in first in the Patriotic 500 competition.

Mr Wells added: “Euan was promoted to his new position at Fort George last Saturday while taking part in training for the upcoming Scottish Cadet Military Skills Competition in which he has been named as the team’s Section Commander.”

Mr Stewart, who is a Culloden Academy pupil and has his heart set on studying mechanical engineering at university, said he was delighted with the honour.

He said: “My brother Andrew was originally in the cadets and he achieved a high level so that inspired me and we also have connections with the Honorary Colonel Councillor Carolyn Caddick whose son was the last RSM so and I guess I was quite inspired by him too.”
