US police hunting for Inverness street trader Kim Gordon have confirmed that a body found at the weekend is not him.

The remains were found around 70 miles away from the beach where Gordon allegedly went swimming.

The 55-year-old, also known as Kim or Kem Avis, failed to appear at the High Court in Edinburgh last week to face 24 charges including rape and sexual assault on a child in Scotland.

A search was launched for Gordon after he was reported missing while swimming at Monastery Beach in Carmel at the end of February.

The body has been found on a stretch of coastline.

He was reported missing by his 17-year-old son who said his dad had gone for a swim.

But police confirmed that a body had been found at Salmon Creek overnight on Saturday.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office said a post-mortem would be carried out and that formal identification had not taken place.

Captain John Thornburg, of Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, said: “We did find a body and we are trying to ID it. We can say it is not Kim Gordon.”

US police said when the hunt started that they believed Gordon had not gone into the sea, and believed he had staged his disappearance.

Gordon’s son told detectives he had gone hiking while his father went for a swim before being reported missing.
